Arnaldur Indridason, Voices: bought this while browsing used book stores in the free hours between work and radio, looking for something to occupy me as I ate. When your country is small enough even grim police procedurals take on the characteristics of cosies )

Steven Brust, Issola: darn, I shouldn't have skipped this. XD;; Not only does it infodump re: the worldbuilding (which is now Clear As Mud), but there's more characterization as well; the variety of stuff that, as I once complained to Charmian, Vlad either doesn't know about his friends and doesn't care to know, or knows and doesn't care to think about. More on this with plot spoilers obv, not that ppl care at this point. )

G gave me the Forgotten Realms Dark Elf Trilogy for my birthday and I still haven't gotten around to it - it makes me think of those SSBB stories, yanno. XD;; I've a couple more books to order (Novik is like Pratchett, once one falls behind one may well never catch up) and then maybe I'll have the courage to eyeball my manga backlog. Steel Ball Run isn't over yet! But they seem to have made it to New Jersey, so the end is in sight.

Easter Sunday: Classic Flavour Easter is the same as Regular Flavour Easter this year. May be able to get hold of the new Doctor Who ep on Saturday night, assuming the usual Internet Jolly Rogers,* but if not it'll accompany the lamb-and-retsina mayhem. Until then this establishment is back to SPOILER LOCKDOWN.**

* Apologies to those of you paying the fee ahaha; ironically I wasn't watching during the years it was co-produced by the Ceeb.

** Insert own Jesus Lives joke.

So two people whose music taste I hardcore respect decided, for some reason, to start a music sharing comm with me, here on Dreamwidth? Unaware that all I am going to upload is 90s alternative and Australian underground and probably make about seven posts rhapsodizing about Radiohead (because no-one has ever heard of them before.)

We are still working on writing some ridiculous rules and finding a sexy layout and all of that business, but you can still go request to join at [community profile] showstoppers. My first post is probably going to be the leak of the new Laura Marling, so consider that your incentive. (Unless you don't like Laura Marling? In which case, fie, fie on you, heathen!)

!!! OMG, THIS IS AWESOME.

Holy shit! Fumi Yoshinaga's Ooku won the Tiptree award this year! This is the first time a manga has ever won it, and, you guys, I srsly did not even know comics were even in the running. I don't know, okay, I never get the memo on these things.

For those unfamiliar: Ooku: The Inner Chambers depicts an alternate history medieval Japan in which a disease wiped out 3/4's of Japan's male population, and thus women ended up taking over most of the stations that men traditionally occupied, and men became carefully protected and valuable breeders. ("Ooku" refers to the harem at Edo castle; here it is populated, of course, by men.) This manga amazing and you should all go read it right now.

The Tiptree award is a well-known annual literary award that's given to SFF works that explore our understanding of gender and gender roles.

Ooku shares the top spot this year with Cloud & Ashes: Three Winter’s Tales, by Greer Gilman, which I am unfamiliar with but will have to check out. eta: Although now that I look closer, a related book of hers was recommended to me a while back.

So, not only is Tuesday the new Monday, Wednesday appears to be the new Tuesday. Thankfully, I am able to take a break from the exciting world of Tax Time™ to bring you the update, only slightly late. (Not-thankfully, I am doing so after about 20 hours of uptime and while on serious painkillers, so if I am less coherent than usual, this would be why.)

We have an action-packed, thrill-a-minute blockbuster at the box office this week (IN A WORLD ... where [staff profile] denise likes to make stupid jokes in the weekly update introduction....) Coming soon to a theatre near you:

➄ APPLAUSE. APPLAUSE.
[personal profile] amber
A gift, from me to you.

Ink (2009) is a beautiful piece of independent cinema. It has sci-fi/fantasy elements, and fantastic special effects despite its low budget. The totally original score is beyond gorgeous, and the script is a triumph — I was left shocked and gasping and crying, and by the credits immediately went to watch it all again. The general themes (of family, sleep, and coping with death) and the delightful strangeness reminds me a lot of Neil Gaiman's darker work.

The IMDB Plot Summary is:
As the light fades and the city goes to sleep, two forces emerge. They are invisible except for the power they exert over us in our sleep, battling for our souls through dreams. One force delivers hope and strength through good dreams; the other infuses the subconscious with desperation through nightmares. John (Chris Kelly) and Emma (Quinn Hunchar), Father and Daughter are wrenched into this fantastical dream world battle, forced to fight for John's soul and to save Emma from an eternal nightmare. Separate in their journey, they encounter unusual characters that exist only in their subconscious. Or do they? Ink is a high-concept visual thriller that weaves seamlessly between the conscious and the subconscious. Ink has been hailed as the new "it" movie and compared to cult classics Brazil, Donnie Darko, The Matrix, Dark City and Pan's Labyrinth.

I can be packed in another 30 minutes, once my pants are dry, so the current plan of action is to sleep for as long as I need to be awake and get on the road an hour and a half after that, and arrive at casa de [livejournal.com profile] q_sama ≈8hours after that. We'll see how the driving is, as well.

(I'm shooting for between 5 and 7 in the evening?)

Things that need to get packed.

I'm not panicking yet, nosir.

Original plan mark "bed at eight, awake at four, on the road at five" didn't happen; I only just put my first load of laundry in to dry. I am allowing myself one (1) cup of tea between now and sleepytimes, and I am making my bed and picking up my room and *packing*

Stuff that needs to get packed:

+ Heymann book
+ Spirit of Nature book
+ Math book
+ Math notebook
+ Pencils

+ Laptop + cords
+ iPod
+ iPod cord
+ Phone
+ Phone charger
+ Camera
+ Camera cord

+ Camera charger cord

NB: Charge camera tonight

+ foods energy bars, apples, candy, pears, sandwiches, hummus + pita, string cheese
+ get a big water and a big vitamin water: energy formula when you get gas.
+ advil

+ Seekrit Prokejt Mark II Things (no seriously I should have mailed them ages ago. I would apparently rather drive 1,700 miles to drop them off in person than drive 2 blocks to mail the bastards.)

+ Clothes: on the road 9 days
+ every pair of jeans you own (5)
+ both pairs of workout pants for Long Driving Days (2)
+ a skirt just in case? (NB: I always pack a skirt. You never know when the need for one will happen)
+ shirts: minimum 9
+ pajamas: 3 sets
+ underwear: enough for 10 days + bras
+ PANIC over how I'mna fit all this stuff in my bag

+ Misc
+ Pillow

+ Blanket for in the car, Just In Case

There is not a simple way to say, "I will spend my spring break geeking out with people from the interwebs" in Russian, is there?

(I'm guessing that "to geek out" loses something in translation, too.)

AAAAAND 20 point composition DONE. (thank god I have an actual itinerary to write about this spring break, because otherwise I would be SHOT. "I plan to stay in bed and read novels for a week, and also write a paper." does not a composition make!)
